1. 8×8 Express

  • First month free trial
  • Prices from £10 a month per user

Express is the basic plan from 8×8. It offers unlimited calls in the UK, plus unlimited video and audio calls. It might not have the bells and whistles of more premium plans, but it gets the job done for small businesses in the UK. Check out our basic guide to VoIP to find out more about what cloused-based phones can give you.

If you’re making international calls often, the X2 plan for £19 a month per user may work out cheaper for you. However, the first month free trial is only available for the Express.

Features of 8×8 Express:

The Express might be simple, but it works on mobile and desktop alongside any existing cloud system like Office 365. If you want to keep your budget low or dip your toes into VoIP, 8×8 is a good place to start. Here are the features you get on their Express service.

  • Call recording
  • Unlimited UK calls
  • App for mobile & desktop
  • Compatible with G Suite or Office 365
  • 8×8 Admin portal
  • Voicemail
  • Click-to-dial
  • Hold music

2. Gamma Standard

  • Prices range from £9.95 to £22.95 per user
  • Easily customisable

Gamma’s Standard plan is one of the cheapest VoIP services in the UK. If you stick to the basic features, you’re looking at a solid price of £9.95 a month which is cheaper than 8×8 Express. The Standard plan is, however, limited. Sole traders and small businesses will probably be fine, but just keep an eye on how many minutes you’re using.

One nice feature of even the standard plan on Gamma is that you can make a Group for calls. Basically, go into your settings and make a group (they should all have a similar job role). Whenever a call comes in, all of their phones will ring. This is a simple and affordable way to optimise your customer service.

You sadly don’t have free unlimited calls, but Gamma does give you quite a bit for the price. Each user gets 2000 free landline and 2000 free mobile phone minutes. As far as cloud based telephones go, Gamma is a decent option for the price.

Features of Gamma Standard:

Unlike some providers, Gamma lets you pick and choose what features you want quite easily. If you want a budget option but need some extra features, Gamma is a good choice.

If you want call recording and integration with your CRM, you’ll have to add them to your plan or upgrade. The Standard keeps things simple. Here’s what you get.

  • Auto Attendant
  • Keep the same VoIP numbers when switching to Gamma
  • Online admin portal
  • Out-of-hours routing
  • Holding music

3. NFON

  • Flexible pricing plans
  • Over 150 optional extensions

For medium businesses, getting cheap VoIP isn’t always easy. If you want more premium features but don’t want to splash out, NFON is what you’re looking for.

This cheap VoIP service can be used with 50+ CRM systems, so you don’t have to worry about changing up your daily systems. It might take a little longer than Gamma or 8×8 to set up, but the payoff is worth it for its high compatibility and range of features.

The most annoying thing about VoIP is when you have to pay for features you don’t even want or use often enough to warrant having on your plan. NFON is an excellent choice for businesses that know exactly what they want!

Features of NFON:

How much your VoIP service depends on what features you choose. And, boy, there’s a lot to choose from! Pick what you need to keep costs down – don’t be tempted by the shiny features you might not need. Here are some of the top features from NFON.

  • Online customer support
  • Call Logging
  • SIP Trunking
  • Alerts / Escalation process
  • Call Recording
  • Call Scripting

4. Wildix

  • First month free trial
  • Unique features for price range

This is the easiest VoIP service to use on our list. Wildix is available to use on most browsers, so you don’t even have to install any apps for it. Like 8×8 Express, you get free unlimited calls to UK landlines and mobiles and it.

One unique thing about Wildix compared to some of the other cheap providers is that they have no limit on the number of people that can join a video conference call. If you’re hosting a large event or big company meeting, having a remote video call of this size is easily done with no extra fees to upgrade through Wildix.

What if you want to make international calls? Wildix is a better choice than some of the cheap VoIP services. Add on international calling to your plan and you get access to over 130 countries.

Features of Wildix:

Similar to NFON, Wildix is very customisable for every business. You get to pick and choose many features to add to your price plan.

  • Doorphone integration
  • Ring groups
  • Call recording
  • Call monitoring
  • Caller ID
  • Call blocking
  • Call queues

5. Vonage Select

  • Prices from £9 a month per user
  • Free 14 day trial

Vonage is one of the biggest providers of VoIP. Their basic plan is one of the cheapest monthly subscriptions you can get, but it does come with one downside. Calls to UK landlines and mobiles cost 10p a minute. If you’re making a lot of calls, it can bump up your bill quickly!

The VoIP service does come with a video conferencing app (Vonage Meetings) that on this price plan can host up to 16 people. The more expensive plans can go over 100.

If you’re looking for a basic, uncomplicated plan Vonage Select could work for you. Just keep an eye on your minutes and bills. 8×8 Express or Wildix is likely a better choice for entrepreneurs and small businesses.

Features of Vonage Select:

The basic plan has many of the everyday features you’ll need, including an easy-to-use app and call features.

  • Desktop and mobile app
  • Call Forwarding
  • Call Transfer
  • Vonage Meetings

6. Lily Comms

  • Prices from £6.99 a month per user
  • Account manager to support your business

Lily Comms isn’t a big name in the telecoms bizz, but they are one of the most affordable. Prices start from £6.99 per user, which is the cheapest on our list.

Make calls using their website or the app, which is available for desktops and mobile phones. There’s also an online management portal, so you can easily track how your calls are performing and see what features you’re using.

One unique thing about Lily is that you get an account manager. They’ll basically guide you through the VoIP set-up and help you pick what features you need. This makes Lily a great choice for any business that hasn’t used VoIP before and needs a budget option.

Features of Lily Comms:

Some advanced features are available for an extra charge, but overall Lily keeps things simple. Here’s what this VoIP provider can offer you.

  • Video conferencing
  • Audio conferencing
  • Outlook integration
  • Web collaboration tool
  • Instant messaging

7. RingCentral Essentials

  • Prices from £7.99 a month per user
  • 14- day free trial

VoIP from RingCentral is only available in the UK for businesses. Their Essentials plan is also restricted to no more than 20 users. If you have more than 20 users, consider their Standard plan or another provider.

The Essentials package does what it says on the tin. You do get an app for desktop and mobile, so you can make VoIP calls on the go. RingCentral also have an inhouse messaging system and video conferencing app, so you don’t have to get another communication system on top of everything else.

What about fax? RingCentral is one of the few providers that offers internet faxing on their VoIP plans. But, if you want unlimited faxing, you’ll have to go on the Standard Plan. Overall, the Essentials is basic but can be restrictive.

Features of RingCentral Essential:

  • Integrate with Salesforce, Microsoft, etc
  • Business text messaging
  • Team messaging
  • Document sharing

Can I get VoIP for free?

Some cheap VoIP providers in the UK do offer free trials, like 8×8 Express. Small businesses may also use free VoIP tools like WhatsApp and Zoom in their communications strategy. These free services do have limited features and security.

See our guide to hosted phone systems to get to know the benefits of having VoIP for your business.

What is the cheapest VoIP service in the UK?
